When by Daniel Pink introduced me to the concept of temporal landmarks—times throughout the year that stand out to people. Temporal landmarks can be powerful motivators for a fresh start. They can be as big as a new year or as small as a new day. They can also be as personal as your birthday or the start of a new job. The beginning of a new year is huge for me. Every year since I can remember, I reflect on the past year and make plans for the next.
Flashback
FollowTheFox started towards the end of 2020 with the goal to launch 4 products over the course of a year and share what I learn in the process. If you’ve been following from the beginning, you’ve witnessed the first product, a habit tracker template, being launched, from inception to sale. Every week I shared insights in this newsletter with a focus on the steps I’m taking and the lessons I’m learning around product design and marketing.
Of all the newsletters my top 3 were
A little mistake that cost me time - a post-launch reflection
How to whip up a simple product page that sells - discussing the elements of a product detail page
How to plan your product launch like a boss - tips on planning the perfect product launch
The top 3 amongst subscribers were
How to prototype like a pro - a primer on prototyping
Falling behind? How to get your project on track - how to catch up when you’re falling behind
How to plan your product launch like a boss - (described above)
If you’re new here and haven’t yet subscribed, I’ve taken down the paywall on the above posts so that you can take a look. The wall will go back up at the end of January 2021.
Anyway, my biggest takeaway since launching my first product is although you can launch a product quickly it takes time to perfect production and earn money. I’m still tweaking the habit tracker and will continue to do so until it can live on its own, that is, produce sales with little oversight from me. It’s a lot like having a baby the older it gets the less you need to keep an eye on it. I’d like for all the products that I release to eventually produce an income with low or no additional effort on my part. I’ll let you (subscribers) know about the tweaks I continue to make, so you know how I’m working to develop a mature product. Let’s talk more about what’s to come.
2021 and beyond
In my last post of 2020, A little mistake that cost me time, I reflected on the launch and identified 3 overarching processes to launch, maintain, and analyze the results of a new product. Since the release of that newsletter I’ve further refined that process into 4 phases:
Product Design - Creating the product
Product Marketing - Creating marketing strategy and materials
Execution - Launching your product guided by the marketing strategy
Evaluation - Evaluating the success of your release
Over the release of my next product, I’ll explain in detail what I’m doing in each phase so that you can do it too if you choose.
Speaking of the next product, I’m going to launch a productivity brand that focuses on products that relate to productivity. My first product, the habit tracker template falls into that category. Now I’m thinking bigger. The brand will house this product and others all related to productivity.
